Seniors, Class of 2021 Service Learning Information

SENIORS, Class of 2021

According to FCPS, service hours should be uploaded into x2Vol by May 1, 2021.  Click here for a copy of instructions for uploading service hours (those earned at Saxon Service and those earned outside of school.  Students should email Betsy Shomaker at @email with any questions.

Please remember: Service learning is NOT mandatory in Fairfax County Public Schools so this process is not intended to add any last minute stress to our senior students.  But if students have the verified and approved hours, and want to apply for a Service Cord, Civic Seal, or STEM Seal, please see the instructions below which have been modified for this year.

Service Learning Cord: Students who earn 40 hours or more of verified service over their high school career are eligible to earn a Service Cord. Hours MUST be uploaded into x2Vol and must be verified by a supervising adult or parent. In order to streamline the process this year, you do not need to print out your Activity Log—Mrs. Shomaker will access it directly.  The reflection component of the Application is important, therefore, we DO NEED a BRIEF (5-8 sentences) reflection on the service you provided, the impact you made, and why it was meaningful to you; this reflection should be emailed to Mrs. Shomaker. Service cords will only be award if the requisite hours are earned AND the reflection is submitted.

Civic Seal:  Please complete the Civic Seal Application and return it to Mrs. Shomaker.  Due COVID, the required number of hours has changed for 2020-21; students need 25 hours of CIVIC related service; see the application for specifics.  Given the fact that some students are online only, we are waiving the need for administration current Government teacher approval. LHS will verify your grades of a “B” or higher in Virginia/US History and Virginia/US Government.

STEM Seal: Please complete the Stem Seal Application and return it to Mrs. Shomaker.  Please remember that you must satisfy all the requirements of the seal including sequenced classes and 50 hours of work-based learning.  This year, we are waiving student counselor’s signature.
