Information about distance learning from April 14 through June 12, 2020

As we all embark into distance learning together, make sure you set yourself up for success with these tips!

Understand the Plan

See the Langley Distance Learning Overview here.

Find Your Best Workspace

Set up your workspace!  Consider where you'll be comfortable, less distracted and able to share your video and audio.  You might look for a level surface to write on, use earbuds or headphones and be ready to be on camera.

Stay Connected and Informed

Check your fcpsschools email!  Your teachers will communicate and provide feedback via email.  Use this email account to reach out to counselors and other staff.  Check Blackboard and Google Classroom for assignments regularly.

Know Your Schedule

Each week we will follow the same schedule. You can find a daily version of the schedule here.

  • Monday - Individual Work Day
  • Tuesday - Virtual Classes
    • 1st 9:15-10am
    • 3rd 10:30-11:15

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, students will be working independently to review and revisit material, email teachers or classmates for clarity, finishing assignments, checking Blackboard and Google Classroom for assignments.

Teacher Office Hours:

Every Wednesday and Friday teachers will hold 90 minutes of office hours following the schedule below.  These office hours are a time for students to ask questions, receive individual support and discuss content with the teachers, much like Saxon Time and after school hours are used.

Teacher office hours are scheduled by department.

  • 9:30-11:00 am: Social Studies, Health and PE, World Languages, Library
  • 11:30am-1:00pm: Math, Fine and Performing Arts, ESOL
  • 1:30-3:00pm: Science, CTE, English, Strategies for Success, Personal Development

Use Blackboard Collaborate Ultra Like A Pro

This is the program you'll use for virtual classes. Use your full name, not a first name or nickname, when you join, or your teacher will not be able to accurately record your attendance. Mute your microphone when you're not talking. Use the chat feature to speak with your class. Raise your hand before talking to avoid talking over others. Remember that this is your class. Keep your communication on topic and kind.

Get Tech Support

Log in to your account to access Saxon Center, the student resource page for Langley High School. You'll find an IT Support Page with solutions to common problems. You can also make an appointment with our School Based Technology Specialist, Lindsey Fisher, for issues pertaining to Blackboard, Google, and other software, from 9-10 AM on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Most of all...

Be patient and flexible as we all learn in a new way together!
