Message from the Principal

GovDelivery2 weeks 5 days ago

Greetings,

Spring has definitely sprung! I hope everyone enjoyed a restful spring break and is ready for the home stretch of the school year. Our students continue to amaze both in and out of the classroom. Let’s get this Saxon celebration started!

A huge shout out to Langley Band, Orchestra and Choir. All programs earned a “Superior” rating at this year’s assessments. As a result, Langley has once again been named a “Blue Ribbon School” as awarded by the Virginia Music Educators’ Association. Also, the Langley Band has also been named a “Virginia Honor Band” by the Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors Association.

Congratulations to the two Saxons who made it to the VHSL State Forensics Championship! Gabriel Elferrane finished in second place in Extemporaneous Speaking, and Alden Walcott came in third place in Storytelling.

The Langley Debate team took home their second consecutive VHSL Super Regional Championship last Saturday. Vishwa Rakasi finished first in Lincoln-Douglas debate, the team of Ahaan Shah and Sahil Gubbi took second place in Public Forum, and Lara De took 9th place out of 23 speakers in Congress. All four participants will move on to the VHSL State Championships on April 26-27 at James Madison University. Congratulations to these students!

I am thrilled to share that three Langley projects are headed to the National History Day State Contest! A round of applause for these wonderful students.

During spring break, over 50 choir students traveled to Europe. While there, they performed at Canterbury Cathedral and Old Royal Naval College in England. Also, they recorded at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin, Ireland.

Please take a moment to listen to the beautiful song recorded during their session. Congratulations to Ms. Player and the incredible singers who participated in this once in a lifetime experience!

As you know, we are in the final quarter of the year. I ask that you please help your student(s) understand the importance of finishing strong. In addition to class assessments, many students will take SOL tests and AP exams over the coming month. We need each Saxon to do their best on these assessments. Thank you for supporting your student(s)’ academic success!

May each of you have a great weekend!

Fondly,

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Did You Know...

The use of oral nicotine pouches are on the rise. Products like Zyn, Velo, and On!  contain nicotine powder instead of tobacco leaf. Nicotine powder differs from tobacco leaf in that the user does not need to spit. Some of these products come in youth-friendly flavors. Oral nicotine pouches are not approved by the FDA for any use, including as a tool for quitting nicotine. Nicotine pouches can contain high concentrations of nicotine, which can put the user at risk of nicotine addiction. Here is more information from truth initiative.

Did You Know...

Do you know the difference between Empathy and Compassion? Here is the full article that helps navigate the difference.

When empathy grows into compassion, it becomes more helpful for both you and the person for whom you demonstrate it. Each one leads to a different response:

  • Empathy is feeling their pain and wanting to remove the hardship they’re enduring.
  • Compassion is feeling their pain and wanting to equip them to overcome it from now on.
